Of course I fucking recognized Claude Monty when I first laid eyes on him. I recognized him and I cursed him out, obviously, for not throwing a tip into the jar at the coffee shop when he was Claude fucking Monty.

It turned out he’d tipped via his app, and that he’d tipped triple what he paid for his latte. I asked him what other sins he’d committed recently. He claimed overdue library books, so I reamed him out for that one, and we were laughing by the end of it.

He ended up asking me to dinner. And I ended up accepting, because who doesn’t like a guy who gets turned on by a public scolding?

The day I fell in love with Claude was the day he asked me what I’d do, what I’d want to see, if I could live in a pre-gov world. We were tangled together on his too-comfortable leather couch, his phone blinking with a weekend’s worth of ignored calls from his manager, and the question came out of nowhere.

The right answer, the Miss America answer, would’ve been one of those kill-the-dictator conundrums, an unanswerable series of “what ifs” that I’d have attempted if he’d asked me after Candace went missing.

Instead, I went with the whimsical.

“Snow,” I said. “If I could go back, I’d want to play in the snow.”
